CROSS TRAIN WITH NIA & RUN HOLISTICALLY!
I've always enjoyed running, mainly because I was outside and hooked up to the sounds of the great outdoors or an awesome playlist!
A sense of freedom envelopes me when I run, and all I need are my favorite running shoes. At least that's all I thought I needed until I began to practice Nia in 2006. A holistic movement practice, Nia keeps me in tune with the voices of my body. By incorporating flexibility, agility, mobility, strength, & stability, into my fitness, I am strong to the core! However, I never underestimate the power of my spirit, mind, and emotions!
What I mean by this is I remember running the Memphis Half Marathon in December, 2006. I hadn't put in the training miles due to a foot injury from running (IMAGINE THAT). However, I paid my entry fee and planned a fun getaway, so I was going to run/walk that race one way or another.
My dad had passed in the Spring of that year, and Babe, my faithful, loving, running companion of 17 years even more recent. To keep a long story short.............I ran holistically and had some real somatic, visceral, euphoric, moments during that race!!!!
Miles 1 through 4: Physical body goes through the motions of warming up and getting used to the running gate.
Miles 4 & 5: Foot piercing pain.....wondering what mile I should start walking?
Miles 5 through 8: See pics of St. Jude's cancer kids and am disgusted with my thoughts of walking while they undergo cancer treatments! Mind kicks in and I have no problem reaching Mile 8.
Miles 8 through 10: I was struggling so I stepped into my dad's 82 year old body that had lost all mobility after his stroke! My dad loved the outdoors (fishing & the clubhouse) so I gave him a beautiful trip in my body sometimes tears were streaming down my cheeks as I felt so close to him.
Miles 10 through 12: My precious dog, Babe, ran along my left side as she had for over 10 years! I could feel the slight tug of her leash and see her eyes gazing up at me!
SO MY BODY, MIND, SPIRIT, AND EMOTIONS ran that race with a SOLID CORE!
Nia has shed inches from my waistline!
Nia has toned and shaped my muscles!
Nia makes me feel WHOLE, NOURISHED, and ALIVE !!
