"While experiencing my first Nia® class tears rolled down my cheek. My emotions were stirring, my spirit was soaring, and pure bliss had been ignited from movement & music that felt good inside and out! After almost twenty years, I had finally found what I had been searching for in fitness & wellness, as well as fulfilling my artistic desire as a dancer. As I stepped in to that first Nia® class, I had rediscovered myself and reconnected to my body spiritually, emotionally, and physically. I was immediately hooked! It was truly a magical experience for me and continues to be one.
While reveling in the beauty of Nia’s® many holistic benefits as a student, I decided to turn that passion towards teaching Nia® and earned my White Belt Certification. Practicing, sharing, and promoting the "Joy of Nia®" is the path I find most pleasurable. With my years of experience as a classroom teacher and background in dance, I relish the opportunities to share my joy of teaching and love of expressive movement through my Nia® classes.
During the fast-paced schedule of our daily family life, the gift of Nia® has helped me maintain balance within my self, marriage, family, and community. To have found exactly what I needed and had been craving for so long is such a personal relief. "Always on the move, I’ve been an avid runner, yogi, weight lifter, Zumba gal, biker, boot camper, you name it. I’ve liked and disliked my workouts, usually enjoying my playlist most. My upper body was strong and my lower body was in shape but never quite ‘whole’. My feet were confined in expensive footwear, and I was usually nursing a pulled or strained ______. You fill in the blank. Perhaps you’ve been there?
In January 2006, I walked into a strange venue not knowing a soul and had no idea what to expect. What I did know is that I was SO ready for a different style of workout that would show results, nurture the holistic me and MOST IMPORTANT it had to be FUN!!! I found Nia and immediately felt the ‘click’. Everything I love and believe in that will stimulate me and my entire life focus in one beautiful art form ~ Nia®.
Nia, encourages me to play with and move my body in accordance with its design and function “The Body’s Way”. Consistent practice had me noticing my core was strong and curvy and inches were falling off. Was I beginning to see a ‘dancer’s body’? Yes! It’s me! Throw in grace, strength, energy, and a sense of calm all working together to improve my balance, reflexes, stamina and most important....... a love for myself and my body!
Six years later, I obtained my White and Green Belts in Nia® Instruction. My former experience in management as well as my Clinical Social Work License has allowed me to inspire others as facilitator, educator, and counselor. True to the social work philosophy, I believe one part of the system affects the whole. With Nia®, I reap holistic benefits. nurturing my body, mind, spirit and emotions.
I love to connect with people. My friends are an eclectic group and you might describe my home decor and taste in music the same way. My hobbies and experiences are vast and colorful. I believe in working hard and playing hard, and what you give you get back two-fold. I’ve been married for 19 years to a great guy who supports and puts up with my adventures and me. My twin ten-year-olds keep me young, busy, and honest.

"I retired recently and really wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I attended this class a while back and laughed all the way through it. At first, I didn’t get it but then I returned again and again. Now, it is part of my routine. It gives me a lift and even helps me with my back. I am more flexible and able to do a few things that I didn’t think I could do. Admittedly, I am not as graceful as others but you never feel embarrassed to be yourself here. "I came to my first Nia® class not knowing what to expect. I'm honestly not a very coordinated person and I had no background in dance or any type of exercise class. I was very intimated during my first class because it was a type of exercise that I had never done before. I know I felt like everyone was watching me...when in fact, no one was. I felt like I was one step behind and always trying to keep up. I told myself that I couldn't make a decision based off of one class, so I came back for another. I found that it got easier to follow the movements and found after my second class that I wanted to come back again. Liz and Carleen are the most positive, encouraging women and such a joy to be around. As I truly reflect on what Nia® means to me and why I love it, it all comes down to Nia® being a movement that allows me to connect my mind, body and soul. "Why I love Nia®...On The Move with Liz & Carleen!! Nia® has been the best new discovery for me. I began over 2 years ago now, and I am completely hooked! If you haven't tried it, you should! It can take a few classes to feel comfortable, but once you do its so powerful. It allows you the chance to listen to your own body, heart and soul. "Why I love NIA® ! Since I was in my 20's I have done a variety of fitness activites. Aerobics, step, kickboxing, running, boot camp, weight lifting, yoga, walking, Zumba, etc. etc. etc. I still do some of these when I can't get to NIA®. When I starting going to NIA® about a year ago my exercise was transformed. It didn't feel like exercise it felt like freedom. I felt like NIA® took all the movements I loved and included the music I love, and then touched a part of my spirit like no other form of movement had. During that year I needed to recover from a knee injury and was able to change my level of movement to accomadate without feeling like I needed to keep up with the person next to me. Now that my knee is recovered I love challenging myself to move freer.

"When I first began Nia®, I liked the regular exercise and the way my body felt after class, as if I could do anything. I began to enjoy the atmosphere Liz and Carleen create with the lighting and music. They began every class with a particular Nia® focus and explained way it's helpful in everyday life. They combined various types of exercises such as Tai Chi and yoga. They always showed various stages of exercise. They closed class with floor exercises and deep breathing, very relaxed. I became pregnant, and because of Nia® I can use methods that they taught to still pick up items off the floor and get back up again. Nia® is an awesome method of exercise! You should try it."
